"Tug John Purves"

    Artist Statement

I am a self-taught artist who began copying comics out of the Sunday
paper at age four.  I work in oil, acrylic, watercolor, pastels, charcoal,
    pencil, and pen & ink.

I was born and raised in Mississippi; and, as a high school senior, I won
first, second, and third prize in a statewide poster contest.  After high
school, I exhibited in many venues, such as museums, libraries, and
banks; and I also sold at art shows.  Although I continued to paint and
draw, my artistic career was put on hold as I spent many years in the
    corporate world.

I began exhibiting again when I moved to Door County in 2005.  My
favorite subjects are animals, sports, and landscapes and seascapes.  I
also do people and pet portraits.

I recently began fingerpainting with water-mixable oils and only my
fingers for the tools.  I like the freedom and looseness of the medium.

I am an avid animal lover and protector and live with three Boston
Terriers and a Chinese Crested – Packer, Lambeau, Cagney, and Yogi.
We all reside in Egg Harbor with my husband Jeff.  I can be reached at
