AARON HOLLAND TO DEMONSTRATE WATERCOLOR

AT DOOR COUNTY ART LEAGUE MEETING

Aaron Holland will be guest speaker at the Door County Art League’s monthly meeting on Monday,
September 24th, beginning at 7:00 PM at the Gibraltar Fire Department meeting room.

The public is invited as Aaron, who describes his work as impressionistic realism, demonstrates watercolor
painting and discusses his personal approach to a picture.  He plans to paint “A Day At The Beach,” a 15” X
30” piece in transparent watercolor.  He will welcome questions from the audience.

Although oil is his primary medium, Aaron says, “I consider watercolor to be the medium of choice when I
just want to have fun.  I like this medium for its freshness and spontaneity and for that ‘wet’ feel that can be
achieved.”  He also appreciates the simplicity of setup and ease of clean-up when creating with watercolor
and often uses watercolor to add a quick splash of color to his sketchbook drawings.  For watercolor painting,
Aaron uses 300 pound Rag, Arches, or Strathmore papers.

When beginning a project, Aaron frequently utilizes a completed drawing which helps him realize an idea and
work out any potential problems that may arise while painting.  He does small, quick color studies on
occasion.  His main subjects are people, landscapes, and still-lifes.

Aaron’s most important artistic influences are his teachers Peter Bougie and Brian Lewis.  He spent 1995 –
1998 at the Bougie Studio in Minneapolis in a full-time apprenticeship and is trained in classical drawing and
oil painting.  Aaron states he has always held a special interest in the worldwide impressionistic movement of
the late nineteenth century.

A resident of Sturgeon Bay, Aaron exhibits locally at the Bosman Gallery and, also, at the Wallflowers Gallery
in Canby, Oregon.  Inquiries about his art may be made through his website at www.hollandartstudio.com.
He will have work in the Miller Art Museum 32nd Annual Juried Exhibit September through November.

When asked what stimulates him and where he gets his ideas, Aaron answered, “The proverbial question…I
am stimulated as an artist to paint what I see around me.  I try to capture the truth about life as I see it and
convey it in a way that others might understand and feel a sympathetic reaction.  In short, I strive to paint
people in their element, but often I will simply paint a landscape that seems beautiful to me, or an
arrangement of objects that is harmonious or pleasing.”
