GLASS ARTISTS TO DEMONSTRATE AT ART LEAGUE MONTHLY MEETING
Door County glass artists Doug and Barbara Henderson will be guest speakers at the Door County Art League’s monthly meeting on Monday, August 27, beginning at 7:00 PM at the Gibraltar Fire Department meeting room. The public is invited as Doug, who describes his work as geometric, and Barbara, who describes her work as more organic, will demonstrate the challenges and joys of working with fused glass. Their presentation will be an interactive introduction giving interested participants an opportunity to explore the medium.
Barbara has a BA in Art and only recently began working with glass. She spent more than 40 years working in the fiber arts, first creating batiks and later weaving off-loom creations and designing soft sculpture dolls. She gets her inspiration from the things around her, which is reflected in the textural and organic nature of her work. Barbara finds enjoyment creating art from objects others see as junk. As she puts it, “The materials are always fun.”
Doug, an educator and museum director, is not a formally trained artist; however, he has always had a desire to do something creative. Doug first experimented as a photographer where his images captured the architectural details of both buildings and landscapes. As a glass artist, Doug incorporates these same structural elements and details into his work. Doug’s work is the Yang to Barbara’s Yin.
Barbara’s and Doug’s whimsical creations are often used to embellish the garden rooms on their Sturgeon Bay property. Doug uses his architectural vision to form the structure while Barbara makes eclectic mosaics to adorn the spaces. Their Studio and Garden at 5401 Bay Shore Drive , Sturgeon Bay , are open by appointment by calling 920-743-9026 or e-mailing barbdoug@doorpi.net. Their fused glass pieces will be on display at Peninsula Jeweler, 218 South Neenah Avenue , Sturgeon Bay , from August 30th through September 23rd.
The Door County Art League was organized in 1986 for the purpose of developing active community involvement in the field of creative arts. Membership is open to artists and all other persons interested in and supportive of the visual arts in Door County. Since the first season, the League has offered a variety of programs to members and guests wishing to enrich their lives through the knowledge, use, and enjoyment of art.
The Gibraltar Fire Department is located at 3496 County Road F in Fish Creek. For more information on the League, go to www.doorcountyartleague.org or call President Dorie Zimmerman at 920-868-1142.
