REPRESENTATIVE FOR ARTIST PAPER PRODUCTS TO SPEAK

AT DOOR COUNTY ART LEAGUE MEETING

Ed Brickler, artist, art materials consultant, and author will be guest speaker at the Door County Art League’s
monthly meeting on Monday, July 23rd, beginning at 7:00 PM at the Gibraltar Fire Department meeting
room.  His appearance is courtesy of Artist Guild in Sturgeon Bay.  As senior Account Manager for Canson
Incorporated, Ed represents Canson papers, Arche papers, and Royal Talens color products.  He is a member
of the Chicago Artists Coalition and the Indiana Plein Aire Painters Association and teaches workshops on
Color Mixing, Composition, Drawing Basics, Art of the Sketchbook, and Plein Aire Painting.

The public is invited as Ed, who will travel here from Indiana, lectures on fine art paper, from manufacturing
to its application in art.  His discussion will cover all papers for drawing, watercolor, and printmaking.  Ed
says, “An artist, like any person in a trade or craft, must know his materials and the techniques in using them
in order to become more proficient in creating art.”

As an artist, Ed’s main medium is oil; but he also works in waterbased media.  He says he likes oil for
flexibility and richness of colors, watercolors and gouache for ease of transport for sketching, and acrylics
for modern motifs and expression.  Ed primarily uses linen or cotton stretched canvas; however, he has
painted on hardboard and gatorboard and enjoys experimenting with a variety of papers, depending upon the
medium with which he is working.

Ed describes his art as a variety of styles, from traditional landscapes and still lifes to abstract.  He says, “I’m
inspired by my travels and visits to museums.  It doesn’t take much to stimulate the creative process.
Sometimes I develop an idea with sketches and, at other times, I just attack the blank canvas either in the
studio or plein aire.”

Ed has been involved in the art industry for more than 30 years.  His interest in art began as “a hobby
stimulated by my desire to be a creative person.”  He has been an artist for more than half his life and shares
his artistic endeavors with a career.  Art stimulates his life and gives him solace in creating.  He also gets vast
pleasure from sharing his vision and his use of materials.

Ed says he has been influenced by many artists.  He picks an artist and studies his or her life and art.  Then he
moves on to another.  He lists Corot, Cezanne, Paul Klee, and Josef Albers as those who have most inspired
him.  Ed considers himself a student of the creative process.  He regards art as the culmination of
imagination, materials, experimentation, and expression and hopes to convey that philosophy to his
audience at the League meeting.

The Door County Art League was organized in 1986 for the purpose of developing active community
involvement in the field of creative arts. Membership is open to artists and all other persons interested in and
supportive of the visual arts in Door County. Since the first season, the League has offered a variety of
programs to members and guests wishing to enrich their lives through the knowledge, use, and enjoyment of
art.

The Gibraltar Fire Department is located at 3496 County Road F in Fish Creek.  For more information on the
League, go to www.doorcountyartleague.org or call President Dorie Zimmerman at 920-868-1142.
