“I love the spontaneity of watercolor, the excitement and the limitless possibilities the medium offers” Ed
Fenendael expounds as he discusses his Fast and Fluid Wet Watercolor demonstration The Door County Art
League will  observe for their June meeting.  Ed has been painting for more than thirty years.  A Native of
Wisconsin, he grew up in a rural environment and was continually inspired by the pastoral scenes of the
world around him.  You could put forth a case that Ed was destined to be an artist because his mother as well
as uncles and aunts were all creative; this creativity could be found on both sides of his family, the arts
flourished.  Some would call it destiny.  Sally Everhardus states that, “luminous watercolors and oils display
Ed’s love of color and the landscape of many locales.  The majority of his works are done plein air (creating
on the spot) in rural Wisconsin, the American Southwest, France and Italy.  His remarkable ability to absorb
and remember details of visual experiences allows Fenendael to recreate the alla prima (all in one sitting)
experience in his studio as well.  Suggesting rather than spelling it out for the viewer are trademarks of his
loose, evocative style.  Eschewing a trend in painting towards hyper-realism, Fenendael’s work gives the eye
enough but not too much: perception rather than stark reality.  The goal is to capture the essence of the
subject.”  Ed took the long way around to reach his present creative status.

In the late seventies, Ed moved to Kansas City Missouri and spent several years there.  Recently, he returned
to Wisconsin and now spends his time in Door County where he creates by both painting and teaching at his
studio, Morning Mist Studio at Windmill Farm.  In addition, he offers lodging at “The Inn at Windmill Farm,
his restored Dutch-style farmhouse. The website for this Band B is:
www.1900WindmillFarm.com.  Ed keeps busy teaching and creating and running his Inn.  Guests share his
studio space watching Fenendael as he works and they quickly observe a man on the move. This artist was
not always “just” an artist.

Starting a career as a dentist left little time for Ed to work on art but he soon found himself taking classes at
the Kansas City Art Institute when ever he had a vacation or a day off.  He was invited to be a teacher at the
school and from there his interest in art outweighed his interest in dentistry.   With his daughters grown and
leaving home our artist decided it was time to pursue the art full time and leave the dental work to others.
During this time Ed was teaching art on Saturdays and Sundays and when ever someone needed him or he had
the time.  The high light of
Ed’s experience was his trip to Monet’s garden, in France, where he was able to paint on his own while
teaching classes in the surrounding cities and burgs.  The gardens were thrilling and the work exhilarating.
His classes were the first ever taught in the garden.   Ed came home ready to do serious art. .  What is a man to
do with so much art work?  EXHIBIT!   Fenendael’s exhibition experiences have been wide and varied.

Exhibitions have taken our artist around the world.  Ed’s work has traveled from Wisconsin to Missouri, to
California to Florida to Illinois to Wisconsin, to Mexico, to Washington D.C. and to France and not once but
numerous times.  This is the same artist who finds time to teach.  He offers classes at the Peninsula Art
School, Washington Island, Springfield Illinois and at his own studio.  To find out more about those classes
you can go to his website at
www.WatercolorExcitement.com.  This website also gives you an opportunity to
peruse Ed’s work.  While observing  work, it is important to keep in mind the love our artist paints into each
canvas.  Ed says that he feels fortunate to be able to communicate his feelings, his joy and his love of nature
in his work.  One of his greatest rewards is to share that love with fellow artists when he teaches.  Our artist is
a firm believer, “that you need only the desire to become involved in art and thus begin this wonderful
journey on the path of creativity.”

.

All of this creativity will come to fruition Monday, June 26 at the Baileys Harbor Town Hall. Meeting time for
this event will be from 7-9pm.  The public is invited to attend.   Ed Fenendael will be presenting Painting Fast
and Fluid in Watercolor.   For more information on The Door County Art League and it’s meetings you may
