My conversation with Larry Basky began as he finished the largest serigraph he has ever created. This piece of work is 32 by 50 inches and holds more than forty colors. Four months of Larry’s life have been invested in this large serigraph. A small glass of wine, a favorite chair and conversation were in order. Larry is also accomplished at creating through intaglio, monoprints, monotypes, drawing and painting. Basky was selected to speak to the Door County Art League meeting July 24. This meeting will be held at the Baileys Harbor City Hall located in Baileys Harbor. Meeting time is set for 7:00. Our subject will be the serigraph and techniques. If you want to check out Larry Basky’s work, you will have to travel to his gallery and studio which are located in Plymouth, Wisconsin.
Traveling and creating are a big part of what makes Basky the artist he is. His interest was whetted while taking a class with Harry Krug years ago. The Ridges set the stage for a growing interest in the arts along with the stimulus from a master teacher. Larry was a coach and an artist for most of his adult years. He received his BFA degree in Printmaking/Drawing at Pittsburg State University in Pittsburgh, Kansas in 1966 and a MA degree in Printmaking/Drawing from Adam State College, Alamosa, Colorado in 1983. Larry’s second love is football and he managed to put the two together and have a rewarding professional life which included working as a high school and college coach and art teacher. These years were spent in Colorado, Kansas, and New Mexico. The drive to become an artist led our artist to open his own gallery in Creede, Colorado in 1992 and close it in 2002 to open his new gallery in Plymouth in 2003.
All of these years of creating were enhanced by exhibit experiences in numerous states. The 75th International Print Exhibition in Philadelphia, the Core National Work on Paper, Denver Colorado, Henterdon Art Center National Print Exhibition, Clifton New Jersey were but a few of the worthy exhibits. Our artist was nominated for the Who’s Who in American Art. His has been published in American Artist Magazine, Screenprinting Magazine, and Colorado Art in Public Places. Creating and exhibiting art led to teaching again. Larry is a workshop instructor in his favorite medium of Serigraphy, Monotypes/prints, Intaglio, and Drawing. All of these activities have still allowed time for Larry to found and implement National Small Print Show for the Creede Arts Council and time for him to jury many print and multi-media art exhibits, locally and nationally.
Our conversation led us to discuss Basky’s work and how it has developed. His major interest is in putting texture into his serigraphy. Stating that he worked for four years to gain the “feel” he was looking for with the texture, it came as a surprise to discover how easily this could be. His techniques are devised by using multiple colors on single screens and blocking out or using a reduction process with a given area on the screen to allow another color to be used. Larry does paint and enjoys experimenting there too. He enjoys taking a microscopic view and blowing it up to see the world in a whole new perspective. Example: his inspiration for Children Of The Wind came from watching his daughter run through the woods at Peninsula State Park. The wind was blowing and she was running and flowing with the wind creating this inspired piece of work. There are no children and no wind and yet, you can see them when you look at the work. Larry does not have to have a scene to inspire him. He is often inspired by line and color. Doing two or three pieces of work a year where line is the focus, Larry states that line must be able to stand alone without color but he accepts it folding into volume and color then becomes dominate. Color leads to texture and once more back to the print. Larry Basky’s discussion on the seriograph promises to lead us on a trip through the development of Larry Basky the artist. The Door County Art League will meet for Larry’s presentation on July 24th at the Baileys Harbor City Hall at 7:00PM. The community is invited to attend.
