Terry Stanley will be demonstrating the Versatility of Casein Paints at the August 28th Door County Art
League meeting.  You might ask what is casein? Casein is an extremely versatile material without the health
hazard concerns of other media.  It is treasured by illustrators for the totally matte finish that reproduces
beautifully thus making casein a great choice for the painters working for the art reproduction market and
/or illustrating kids’ books according to Terry.  A closet cousin to casein is egg tempera, but casein is a milk
emulsion rather than egg.  It can be used with a knife or brush-utilizing a thin wash like watercolor or thick
like acrylic or oils.  The great advantage is that you can go back into it with water for days and move the paint
around.

Terry Stanley comes to the DCAL as a representative of the Richeson Art School and Gallery, a division of
Jack Richeson and Co.,  Inc., one of the nations largest manufacturer of art materials and supplies, located
near Appleton,  Wisconsin.   Terry is a Signature Member of the Pastel Society of America and a Member as
well as Wisconsin State Ambassador of the Portrait Society of America.

With all of these qualifications Terry spends time doing workshops in drawing, pastels, acrylics and caseins.
She is a regular prize winner in juried competitions and exhibitions throughout the USA.  The road to success
as a qualified artist has been an interesting one for Terry.  Her original career found her working in Law
Enforcement.  She was an FBI trained police artist.  After a career ending slide down a steep embankment, the
injury left Stanley searching for a new direction. She decided to try a few art shows and found some success.
The best bit of success was being found by the Richeson’s.  They discovered our artist at an art fair and were
immediately impressed by her work.  After purchasing several pieces of her work, the Richeson’s and Terry
entered a business arrangement that allowed her to start their Art School and Gallery.  She was their creative
force in getting the school up and running and is the stabilizing force in building and producing and showing
work by the students. The major goal is to promote the visual arts, help everyone from amateur to pro grow
in their work and give access to not only the finest materials, but  the finest talents as guest artists,  from
around the country.  Having her work recognized and exhibited in public and private collections throughout
the US has given her insight on how to help others get started.  Stanley’s work can be found in the Wisconsin
Technical College system, Wisconsin Public Services, and private collections in New York, Florida, The
Japanese Consulate in Seattle, and more.

When producing work on a personal level, Terry finds herself caught up in images of people of every hue and
shape and form.   Much of the production thought process is accomplished as she drives to work and home.
The paintbrush or pastels touch the canvas after much thought has been put into the work.  Occasionally our
artist will use a reference photo and does use a model pose to help work out lighting, clothing issues etc.
Stanley’s first preference is to work from life.  Our artist thrills in the interpretation of her thoughts and
creates the approach to the piece before stepping in front of the canvas.  Brilliant colors are used   but the
true piece of work revolves around a well defined study of value more so than color.  The application of
brilliant and varied colors of the right value makes a work painterly in her estimation..

The League is eager to watch this demonstration on Casein as it is presented by Terry Stanley on August 28 at
the Baileys Harbor Town Hall, from 7-9 pm.   The community is invited to attend.  For more information an
