MARGARET LOCKWOOD HONORED AT RECEPTION
FOR 23RD ANNUAL JURIED EXHIBIT AND MASTER’S
PRESENTATION;

TEN AWARDS GIVEN OUT TO SHOW PARTICIPANTS

More than a hundred people attended the Sunday, June 14th, opening
reception of the Door County Art League’s 23rd Annual Juried Exhibit,
during which
2009 Master Artist Margaret Lockwood was honored.
The exhibit, which runs through August 2nd at the Link Gallery, located
in the
Door Community Auditorium 3926 Highway 42, Fish Creek, has
work from 73 multi-faceted and multi-talented members of  the League.
That is 50 – yes, fifty! – more artists than last year’s show and is an
extraordinary growth.

The Link Gallery is an exciting new venue for the Juried Exhibit, and the
League appreciates the support from Patti Podgers, Link Gallery
Facilitator, who said, "I am delighted that the Door County Art League is
once again exhibiting in our Link Gallery.  The array of art in all mediums
is a visual treat and a wonderful sampling of the excellent quality of Door
County's artists."

While the Juried Exhibit is on display at the Link Gallery, the Door
Community Auditorium has a number of wonderful performances, which
should bring scores of viewers to our show.  The summer is a much
better time for our biggest event of the year to take place and should pay
off handsomely for future League involvement.

During Sunday’s reception ceremonies, Exhibit Judges Hermke Timm,
Sarah Bradley, and 2008 Master Artist Ed Fenendael presented three
Awards of Excellence.  The winners were Barbara and Doug Henderson
for their fused glass piece entitled “Crazy Quilt #1,” Penny Pfister for her
oil painting called “Chelsea Afternoon,” and Carl Mengert for his paper
collage, “Flair.”  Each received $100.

Furthermore, the judges awarded six Honorable Mention prizes.  They
were given to Judy Ritter for her jewelry set, “Gold Peyote Beaded
Necklace and Earrings;” Jane Barnard for “Cave Point,” a watercolor;
Carol Roso for “Transformation,” also a watercolor; Cal Bonniver for
“Chicago,” an oil pastel; Sally Berner for her oil entitled “Mourning
Glory;” and Keith Wickert for “Going Home,” photography.  The
People’s Choice selection was “Here’s Looking at Ewe,” a gouache and
watercolor by Mary Streu.  Each received a $25 gift certificate to Hide
Side in Fish Creek, who not only donated the gift certificates but also
paid for printing the reception program.

CONGRATULATIONS TO ALL THE WINNERS!

Ed, Sarah, and Hermke, who we thank profusely for their expertise and
valued counsel, were very pleased with the number and quality of entries
in the Juried Exhibit.  Margaret was introduced by 2006 Master Artist
Franne Dickinson and handed her Master’s Award by Past President
Jeanne Whildin.

The League is extremely fortunate to have Master Artists, such as
Franne and Ed, who are so supportive of our efforts.

Of course, no show is possible without the help of League members.
Exhibit Chairpersons JoAnne Rosenfeld and Randy Rasmussen were
aided by intake assistants Cheryl Stidwell Parker, Marcia Nickols, and
Sally Berner.  The hanging crew of Marty and Glen Gerber, Gale
Ritchey, Karen Shanahan, and Hermke Timm did a tremendous job of
display.

Mary Streu not only provided three beautiful flower arrangements for the
tables at the reception, she (and her granddaughter Sophia) graciously
accepted kitchen duty.  Pat Olson and Cheryl pitched in wherever
necessary.  The delicious catered hors d’oeuvres were augmented by
wonderful brownies made by Barbara Rasmussen.  Keith Wickert took
fantastic photos of the festivities.  Guests at the reception were treated to
the music of classical guitarist Steve Lavell.

Gale Ritchey and her team of raffle ticket purveyors, including Mary
Anderson and Karen, went above and beyond to sell tickets for the glass
“quilt” raffle, providing the League with a nice profit.

The Hendersons, who were the force behind the “quilt” project began at
the February general meeting, are thoroughly appreciated for their efforts
in bringing this undertaking to fruition.  And don’t despair those of you
who didn’t win, another “quilt” will be raffled at the Gallery in the fall.
The raffle winner was Noel Enders of Wauwatosa, and Karen Shanahan
sold the winning ticket.

The League has another Link Gallery exhibit planned for September, so
please plan to participate.  More details will follow.
